What is the timing belt and pulley?
A timing pulley, Fig. 1, is a cogged or cross-tooth pulley, similar to a chain and sprocket, where the belt teeth match the pulley tooth. In the 1940s, U.S. Rubber invented the first timing pulleys, also known as synchronous pulleys, and belts. The original purpose of timing pulleys was to maintain two shafts in synchrony, as the name suggests. Over the past sixty years, timing belts and pulleys have come to be seen as a positive drive substitute for chains and a better option than friction drives like V-belts.
Timing belts, sometimes referred to as cam belts, serve as timing chains in engines with bigger bores and strokes. By coordinating the crankshaft and camshaft rotation, they are essential to the functioning of internal combustion engines. Proper sequencing of the valves and pistons is ensured when these two components are in balance. 1. Pitch
Pitch is measured on the pulley pitch circle (also known as the sprocket pitch circle), which is the distance between the centers of one tooth and the neighboring teeth. It is advised that engineers select timing belts and pulleys with the same pitch when designing a timing belt and pulley drive system, as timing pulleys and belts with various pitch dimensions would not work well together.
2. Pitch diameter
As seen in Fig. 2, the pitch diameter is the measurement of the straight line that passes from the pulley's center and into the pitch circle.
3. Outside diameter
When the timing belt meshes with the pulley, the outermost surface of the pulley is the component that comes into direct touch with it. The outside diameter, which is the diameter created by this outermost surface, can be computed using the following formula:
Where: U = distance from the sprocket pitch circle to the outermost surface of the timing pulley.
4. Speed ratio
The speed ratio, as its name implies, is the ratio of the driven pulley's rotational speed (measured in revolutions per minute) to the driving pulley's rotational speed. As demonstrated below, it can alternatively be calculated by dividing the total number of teeth on the bigger pulley by the total number of teeth on the smaller pulley:

How do the timing belt and pulley work?
The internal combustion engine of your car uses timing belts, which are just strengthened rubber bands, to synchronize the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft. The timing belt performs cyclic work. Its main job is to synchronize the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys, Fig. 3, by rotating the former. There are two camshaft pulleys on some versions. In order for the valves and pistons to push cams on the camshaft at the appropriate moments, the timing belt synchronizes them. This procedure is similar to cycling on a pedal. Before the pistons and valves force the cams down once more, they must reach the top of the cycle. The teeth on the inside of the belt line up with the gears. The timing belt's teeth produce friction when it makes contact with the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. A broken timing belt may cause the crankshaft and camshaft to come out of synchronization. This can cause the valves and pistons to break because it throws off their timing. If you have a timing chain, the damage is frequently even greater.
In order to keep the timing belt under pressure, each timing belt also requires a tensioner. The tensioner can be manually adjusted, oil pressure actuated, or spring loaded.
